A quiet, rain-slicked Craven Street in 1974, captured at a time when this tucked-away corner of Westminster still had a slightly worn, lived-in charm. The row of Georgian terraced houses shows the usual mix of peeling paintwork, iron railings and modest hotels common in central London during the era—one sign identifies the “Waldor Hotel,” a typical small boarding house of the period.
Parked along the kerb is a wonderfully out-of-place French visitor: a Citroën DS with French plates (26 MB 83), its elegant lines contrasting with the more familiar British cars surrounding it. Net curtains, window boxes and a striped canopy over one doorway complete the scene, all telling of a time when this street felt more residential and far less polished than today.
