A striking view of Christ Church Greyfriars in 1971, its skeletal ruins standing amid a City still visibly shaped by the destruction of the Blitz. The elegant Wren-designed tower — completed in 1704 — rises untouched above the shattered body of the church, which was almost entirely destroyed during the heavy bombing of 29 December 1940. Only the tower and parts of the outer walls survived.
By the early 1970s, as seen here, the site remained an open wound: the bombed-out nave still roofless, window arches empty, and the interior long cleared of debris. The surrounding hoardings display period billboards, while post-war office blocks fill in the background, reflecting the City’s rapid but uneven redevelopment.
To the north is King Edward Street, and beyond that the bulk of the General Post Office headquarters — itself demolished shortly afterwards as new commercial projects swept through the area.
Today, the tower survives as a listed structure, but the footprint of the church has been transformed into a peaceful memorial garden, its layout echoing Wren’s original plan. This photograph captures the poignant moment before that regeneration, when wartime scars were still an everyday part of the London landscape.
