Oxford Street, London, in 1971, with red Routemaster RM2095 filling the scene beneath a large Pan Am advert proclaiming “Fly with experience.” Around it is a fine cross-section of everyday West End traffic, including a pale Mini and other small saloons edging through the congestion, while pedestrians in smart early-1970s dress step between the vehicles in front of the shops. In the background stands the modern frontage of the Peter Robinson department store, whose rebuilt Oxford Street premises represented the more up-to-date retail architecture of the period in contrast to the older shopping blocks nearby. The combination of London Transport red, Pan Am branding and the busy Oxford Street crowd makes this a particularly vivid snapshot of central London at the start of the decade.
