Gipsy Moth IV—the yacht in which Sir Francis Chichester made his pioneering solo circumnavigation of the globe in 1966–67—is seen here on display at Greenwich in 1971, shortly after being placed into her custom-built dry dock beside the Thames. Visitors gather around the celebrated vessel on a damp, grey day, with the industrial skyline of east London still dominating the river: the towering chimneys belong to the old Greenwich Power Station, while cargo lighters, cranes and barges reflect the Thames’ working character in its final years before decline. In the distance, the new high-rise estates of the Isle of Dogs rise through the haze. Gipsy Moth IV remained here for decades before being fully restored in the 2000s and returned to sea.
