Fournier Street, London E1, in the 1970s, showing a weathered terrace of old Spitalfields commercial buildings with only a few surviving shopfronts breaking up the run of shuttered and faded premises. Visible businesses include Ivor Dembina (Wholesale) Ltd, advertising babies’ wear, children’s wear, hosiery, knitwear and underwear, and J.D. Collins, another wholesaler trading from a partly closed frontage. To the left, the windows of M. Eker Furs & Skins hint at the area’s older specialist trades, while farther along a large painted sign for Beadle Collins & Co Ltd survives on the brickwork above. Parked cars, patched brick façades and uneven shopfronts give the whole street a worn but still working character, capturing Spitalfields before later regeneration transformed much of the district.
