Looking south down Garnault Place toward Exmouth Market in the 1970s, this elevated view was almost certainly taken from the upper floors of LSE’s Rosebery Hall. Dominating the right-hand side is the magnificent red-brick Finsbury Town Hall (1895), with its ornate terracotta detailing and distinctive corner turret. On the left stands the now-vanished pub at 70 Exmouth Market — the London Spa, a long-established local landmark whose name recalled the 18th-century medicinal spa that once drew visitors to the area. The pub survived into the late 20th century before finally closing in 2002, and today the building has been completely redeveloped. This photograph captures Clerkenwell at a moment when Victorian civic grandeur and traditional corner pubs still defined much of the neighbourhood’s character.
