A flotilla of inshore fishing boats stages a dramatic protest on the Thames in 1971, voicing growing anger over proposed EEC fishing regulations. Banners reading “Save Our Limits”, “No to EEC Policy” and “Save Our Fishing Grounds from Being Raped” reflect the deep anxiety within the British fishing industry as negotiations for Britain’s entry into the EEC threatened to open UK waters to European fleets under a shared-access policy. In the background stands the imposing General Steam Navigation Company (GSNC) building at Tower Bridge – a landmark riverside structure that once housed one of London’s oldest coastal and continental shipping firms. The building has since been demolished, making images like this a rare record not only of the protest but of a changing Thames skyline.
