The faded frontage of E. Gandolfi Ltd on Chapel Street, photographed in 1974, belies the long family history behind the name. The company was founded in the early 1920s by Carlo Gandolfi and named after his wife, Elizabeth, moving to Chapel Street in the late 1920s. What began as a small family venture grew into a multi-site operation, with a warehouse in Paddington and a second shop opening on Marylebone Road in 1949. The firm later expanded further, with manufacturing moving to Mark Road in Hemel Hempstead and, many years afterwards, to Wellingborough. All four of Carlo and Elizabeth’s children worked in the business. This row of Chapel Street shops was later earmarked for demolition to make way for a new hotel. Work stalled, however, when it was discovered that an old river ran directly beneath the site, leaving the plot largely empty for decades. Today, the space is reportedly occupied by an electricity substation.
