A wonderfully clear view of a classic London Fire Brigade Dennis F108 appliance, photographed outside Cannon Street Fire Station in 1972. Introduced in the late 1950s and continuing into the early 1970s, the F108 was one of Dennis’s best-known London pumps, instantly recognisable by its curved bodywork, ladder gantry and neatly arranged hose lockers.
Stations like Cannon Street—built in 1906, as the stonework above the doors shows—were still using these machines during a period of huge transition in firefighting technology. The bright post-war red livery, London Fire Brigade crest and appliance number C25 capture the era perfectly, a time when central London streets would often echo with the distinctive sound of a Dennis engine heading to a shout.
