A beautifully crafted wooden motor-sailer sits moored in the calm waters near the entrance to Limehouse Basin, at a time when this stretch of the Thames was still very much a working, half-forgotten corner of London’s docklands. The surrounding warehouses and light-industrial buildings – many already derelict or underused – hint at the area’s declining post-war fortunes, long before the Docklands boom transformed the skyline. In the distance, the newly built tower blocks of Stepney and Poplar rise above the old riverside wharves, marking the contrast between Victorian dockland and the changing East End. Today this scene would be unrecognisable, but in the 1970s Limehouse still carried the atmosphere of a fading maritime district, with craft like this one providing some of the last reminders of the area’s seafaring past.
