Leinster Mews, London, in 1977, viewed from above from the Lancaster Gate Hotel and showing the long run of old mews buildings tucked behind the grand terraces of Bayswater. The narrow cobbled lane is lined with garage doors, modest house fronts and weathered brickwork, while the black-painted sign for Uslin Distributors and a hanging board advertising garage, car sales, repairs and service hint at the working character these back streets could still retain in the 1970s. Flower boxes on the window sills soften the otherwise utilitarian façades, and the elevated viewpoint, with chimney stacks and modern balcony rails in the foreground, makes this a particularly evocative record of a London mews caught between its older service-yard past and its later residential reinvention.
