Jesus Christ Superstar at the Palace Theatre, London, in 1973, with the vast illuminated theatre frontage dominating Cambridge Circus. The great signboard, draped with red theatrical swags and centred on the winged emblem of the show, turns the whole façade into a giant advertisement, while smaller boards proclaim “It is mind stunning” and direct theatregoers to the Cambridge Theatre opposite. In the foreground, a stream of pedestrians in flared trousers, long hair, patterned knitwear and platform shoes crosses the road, capturing the street fashion of the moment as clearly as the theatre architecture itself. A black cab waits by the kerb to the left, adding another familiar London detail to this lively West End scene from the height of the musical’s early success.
