May’s Court, London, in 1976, showing the wide alley just north of Trafalgar Square that runs between the London Coliseum to the south and the site later occupied by the St Martins Lane Hotel to the north. On the left is the brick side of the London Coliseum, its theatre entrance signage still visible above the pavement, while the right-hand side is lined with plainer later frontage including signs for Colosseo, the Italian restaurant. Near the centre stands a classic red K6 telephone box, with motorcycles parked against the Coliseum wall and a few pedestrians moving through the passage. The mix of grand Edwardian theatre architecture, backstreet service frontage and the familiar phone box gives the scene a very distinctive central London character, capturing a corner of the West End that has since changed considerably.
