Looking west along Knightsbridge, London, in 1972, from Scotch Corner towards Kensington Gore, with the Scotland tourist information office on the left beneath a London Transport roundel. The long run of stone-faced buildings beyond is broken by a heavily scaffolded frontage, while red double-decker buses, a green coach, vans and small saloons move through the broad roadway. On the right, a stark modern block contrasts with the older terraces opposite, and in the distance the red-brick tower of Holy Trinity, Brompton, rises above the trees. It is a useful record of Knightsbridge at a moment when smart west London traffic, tourist services, hotel architecture and post-war redevelopment all met on one of the capital’s main western approaches.
