Piccadilly Circus, London, 1971. This street-level view captures the circus before the later rebuilding of its famous advertising corner, with a red London Transport double-decker on route 22 heading through the junction and a steady stream of cars passing the central railings. On the left are several Underground signs for Piccadilly Circus Station, along with a William Younger Tavern Bitter sign above the shopfronts, while on the right the curved frontage is crowded with bright commercial signs including “Things go better with Coke” and a vertical Shoppers sign. The large illuminated frontage ahead, the busy pavements, the black cab at the edge of the frame and the mix of pedestrians in early-1970s dress all give the scene the unmistakable atmosphere of central London at the start of the decade.
