Looking south along Carnaby Street towards Beak Street in 1973, this colour photograph captures the famous Soho shopping street during a period of bold reinvention. The newly pedestrianised roadway is covered in the striking pink, yellow, and black geometric rubber paving for which Carnaby Street became well known in the 1970s. Shoppers in wide-lapelled jackets, belted coats, and other typical period fashions pass businesses including Anthea Discotheque, Carnaby Gents Hair Fashion, and Shelley’s Shoes. Hanging shop signs and spherical street lamps add to the distinctive appearance of the narrow street, which had only recently been pedestrianised to cope with the crowds of tourists and fashion-conscious visitors it attracted. Already world-famous from its role in the youth culture of the 1960s, Carnaby Street remained a lively centre for independent retailers and boutiques throughout the following decade.
