Oxford Street at the corner of Argyll Street, London, in 1970, shortly after the introduction of the new one-way traffic system, with crowds gathered outside Oxford Circus Underground station in the summer light. The great vertical NEWS sign of the former New Academy / Academy Twin cinema dominates the left-hand side, a surviving reminder of its newsreel past even after conversion to twin-screen use. At street level, a Wimpy Bar sits beside the station entrance, while the rounded corner building on the right carries signs for Toppers the Hairdresser at Nos. 237 & 239 Oxford Street. Below, the station frontage includes Green Line Enquiries at Western House, and period traffic passes by in the form of two black London taxis and a dark saloon. It is a wonderfully busy West End street scene, full of commercial clutter and recognisable landmarks from a stretch of Oxford Street that has since changed dramatically.
