This 1976 view outside Westminster Abbey centres on the official Westminster Abbey gift shop built into the Abbey precinct wall, with its gold-lettered Westminster Abbey Books Pictures sign and display windows clearly visible beneath the great Gothic masonry behind. A black London taxi with bright red wheel trims is parked at the kerb, while small groups of pedestrians in patterned coats and dresses stand talking on the pavement, giving the scene a very everyday London feel despite the famous setting. The photograph also catches the contrast between the Abbey’s medieval stonework, tracery and buttresses above and the lower shopfront below, showing a side of Westminster that once felt more informal and less tightly managed than it does today.
