Norman Schlund, better known as “The Walker”, at Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park, London, in 1979, caught mid-performance with one leg raised as a small crowd watches on. A well-known post-war character at the Corner, Schlund was a homeless ex-serviceman who reportedly slept on London night buses and became familiar to generations of regulars for his intense, often theatrical public speaking. In his earlier years he struggled with a severe stammer, which he worked to overcome by speaking in public, first from a small soap box and later before larger crowds. The group around him, in denim, leather jackets and late-1970s casual clothes, helps place this vivid scene firmly in its period while capturing the eccentric, democratic atmosphere that made Speaker’s Corner unlike anywhere else in London.
