Nelson Road, Greenwich, in 1974, looking towards Nicholas Hawksmoor’s St Alfege Church, whose tower rises above the trees at the far end of the street. The scene is full of everyday town-centre detail: a hanging sign for Surveyors & Valuers on the left, the curved Borough of Greenwich sign ahead, and direction boards pointing towards Deptford, Lewisham, New Cross, Greenwich Park, Surrey Docks, Bermondsey and the Rotherhithe Tunnel. On the right are shopfronts including Greenwich China’s Antiques, while parked and passing cars, belisha beacons and pedestrians in coats and flared trousers give the whole view a strong mid-1970s character. It is a fine record of central Greenwich before later traffic management and retail changes altered the feel of this historic approach to the church.
