Myddelton Street, Clerkenwell, in the 1970s, photographed from LSE’s Rosebery Hall with a layered view of old and new inner London stretching towards the City. On the left rises Michael Cliffe House, while Joseph Trotter Close runs across the bottom of the frame in the foreground. Beyond the open redevelopment land and school buildings, the white spire of St James’s, Clerkenwell stands right of centre, and between it and St Paul’s Cathedral on the skyline can be seen the dome of the Old Bailey. The mixture of post-war housing blocks, institutional buildings, cleared sites and surviving church landmarks makes this a particularly telling view of Clerkenwell at a time when large parts of inner London were still in transition.
