Millbank, London, in 1977, looking south with the broad sweep of the road curving past the junction with Thorney Street and the great tower of the Palace of Westminster rising in the distance. The heavy stone government building on the left, with its long grid of sash windows, contrasts with the plainer modern block beside it, while the line of trees on the right screens the riverside and gives this stretch of Westminster an unusually open feel. A motorcyclist rides towards the camera, with a small saloon and scattered traffic following behind, creating a calm but unmistakably late-1970s London street scene. It is a strong view of Millbank before later redevelopment and security changes altered the character of this part of the riverfront.
