An RT-class bus, RT1851, heads along Piccadilly, London, in 1970, passing through a part of the West End still dominated by traditional red buses, major insurance offices and wide, comparatively uncluttered roadways. On the right is the imposing Royal Insurance Group building, while opposite on the Regent Street corner stands the ornate frontage of the Norwich Union offices above a ground-floor branch of Iceland, a reminder that the chain once had a much more central presence. RT1851 itself would be withdrawn only a few years later, disappearing from London service by 1973 as the RT fleet rapidly gave way to Routemasters and newer types. The result is a particularly strong transitional view of Piccadilly before later streetscape changes and the rationalisation of central London’s visual clutter.
