Petticoat Lane Market on Wentworth Street, London, in 1970, with a brightly lit fruit and vegetable stall trading beneath the shopfronts of Levitt and J. Robinson at No. 29. The barrow is piled high with cauliflowers, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, aubergines, lettuces and other produce, with handwritten prices still visible among the display, while bunches of vegetables hang from the canopy under bare light bulbs. To the left, rails of clothing outside the neighbouring stall underline the mixed character of Petticoat Lane, where fashion, household goods and fresh produce all jostled for space. The men in caps and dark overcoats, the winter light and the crowded, makeshift frontage together make this a wonderfully atmospheric East End market scene.
