Petticoat Lane Market on Middlesex Street, London, in 1974, seen at full crush with the roadway almost completely lost beneath a maze of timber-framed stalls, canvas covers and tightly packed shoppers. The shopfronts behind include Mecca Bookmakers and L. Moscovitch Ltd at No. 58, while in the background can be seen The Bell pub, its frontage partly visible beyond the market barrows. Boxes stacked above the stalls, hanging clothes and the dense flow of people all capture the crowded, noisy character that made Petticoat Lane one of London’s most famous street markets. It is a vivid East End market scene from a period when this part of Middlesex Street still retained much of its older commercial atmosphere.
