Petticoat Lane Market, London, in 1973, seen from St Botolph Street looking up Middlesex Street towards the busy market area. The curved corner in the foreground leads into a scene dominated by the stark post-war market block with its bold yellow Franzenberg’s signs, while the fascia above still proclaims “THIS IS THE WORLD RENOWNED PETTICOAT LANE SUNDAY MARKET”. A Car Park Entrance sign, a Mini-Cars board and the subway sign on the left add further period detail, while shoppers cluster around clothing stalls beneath the fluorescent-lit overhang. The contrast between the modern market building, the surviving older shopfronts farther up Middlesex Street and the dense crowd at street level makes this a particularly good record of Petticoat Lane in the early 1970s. The large buildings on the right were demolished in 2017 ad replaced by a Travelodge Hotel.
