Paxman Instruments at 116 Long Acre, Covent Garden, London, in 1977, with the shopfront filled by a striking display of gleaming brass instruments arranged across the large plate-glass window. The dark fascia carries the PAXMAN name and street number in gold lettering, while the adjoining doorway is marked Langley House, framed by elaborate surviving decorative stonework that hints at the building’s older character. To the right, the narrow side street, warehouse conversion sign and modern no-entry sign place the scene firmly in a Covent Garden that was still gritty and transitional, before the area’s later reinvention as a polished retail and leisure district. It is a wonderfully crisp late-1970s record of one of London’s best-known specialist musical instrument shops.
