OXO Tower Wharf on the River Thames, London, in 1977, with the former OXO cold store still carrying the great rooftop slogan “DEWHURST The Master Butcher”, a reminder of its Vestey ownership. The building had begun life around 1900 as a power station before being rebuilt in 1928–29 by the Liebig Extract of Meat Company as a cold store, complete with its Art Deco tower and the ingenious OXO-shaped windows that famously sidestepped restrictions on riverside advertising. In the foreground, viewed from a passing boat, a Somerton Rayner helicopter is landing on the Barge William heliport, an especially unusual period detail; both the helicopter firm and Star Aviation, which operated the barge, were also Vestey interests. Together the cold-store block, riverside jetty and helicopter landing capture a strikingly commercial stretch of the Thames before the South Bank’s later reinvention.
