Piccadilly Circus redevelopment, London, 1977. This evening view captures Piccadilly Circus during a major period of change, with the familiar illuminated theatre signs still glowing on the left while the long-cleared site behind the famous advertising corner is finally being rebuilt. Scaffolding, hoardings and a tower crane dominate the centre and right of the scene, while the bright frontage of the Piccadilly Theatre advertises RSC Wild Oats and passing traffic includes a red sports coupe, a Mini and other period cars circling the junction. Back in 1960, the old block behind the iconic Coca-Cola and Guinness signs was demolished to make way for a planned skyscraper. The tower was never built, but the large retaining wall that supported the illuminated adverts was left standing for more than a decade.
In 1977 that temporary wall was finally demolished, as seen here, clearing the site for an entirely new building. When the redevelopment was completed a few years later, a fresh Coca-Cola sign returned to its familiar spot, joined at street level by a Wimpy restaurant and a Boots chemist, both opening around 1980. The Wimpy became a Burger King in 1989, while Boots remains on the site today.
