Piccadilly Circus, London, 1979. This bright late-1970s view looks across Piccadilly Circus towards the famous advertising corner, where the rebuilt hoardings for Canon, Coca-Cola and Fuji dominate the scene above the busy pavements and Underground entrance. To the left, the neon frontage of the Piccadilly Theatre is advertising Peter Barkworth and Hannah Gordon in Brian Clark’s new play Can You Hear Me at the Back?, with signs below for the Criterion Chinese Restaurant. On the far left stands the domed frontage of the Westminster County Court, while on the right the curved corner entrance of Lillywhites faces the junction beside a City of Westminster direction sign for Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus, Cambridge Circus and Leicester Square. A black London taxi, white delivery van, parked motorcycle and crowds around the railings complete a strongly period West End street scene at the end of the 1970s.
