Piccadilly Circus from Regent Street, London, 1971. Looking down into the circus from the Regent Street side, this busy early-1970s view is full of familiar West End detail. In the distance are the advertising frontages for Max Factor, Gordon’s Gin, Embassy and Minolta Cameras, with the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and the figure popularly known as Eros rising in front of the buildings beyond. The street is crowded with black cabs, red double-decker buses and period saloons, while the foreground pavement is animated by passing pedestrians, including a child in a bright red hooded top. Direction signs for Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Cambridge Circus, together with the bronze-painted lamp columns, help fix the scene firmly in central London at the start of the 1970s.
