Piccadilly Circus, London, 1972. This crisp early-1970s view shows the circus with the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain at the centre and the great advertising corner rising behind it. The huge curved hoardings are dominated by Volkswagen, Cinzano The Bianco, Skol International Lager and the giant Coca-Cola panel, while on the far left the familiar Bulova Accutron clock is still in place. Beneath the signs can be picked out more period names including Rotary, H. Samuel, Cartoon Cinema and the bright Dunlop clock further along the street. Most striking of all is the narrow pale gap between the Coca-Cola and Cinzano hoardings, marked “Advertising Space To Let”, showing the site left behind after the removal of the famous Guinness clock. A red London Transport bus on route 19, black railings, globe-topped lamp standards and scattered pedestrians complete a classic Piccadilly Circus scene from 1972.
