A cheerful trio of American tourists pause for a photo beside a bold “It’s finger lickin’ good” Kentucky Fried Chicken advert on the London Underground in 1973. The tiled passageway and curved ceiling place them on one of the network’s deep-level Tube lines, where bright commercial posters offered a splash of colour amid the otherwise utilitarian surroundings. Their coats, glasses and camera bags reflect the fashions of early-70s travel, while the KFC poster – featuring Colonel Sanders and the then-new red-and-white bucket branding – captures the moment when American fast-food chains were rapidly gaining a foothold in Britain. The image is a lively snapshot of both tourism and pop culture in London at the time.
