This 1976 photograph looks inside a Victoria Line train on the London Underground, capturing the clean-lined modern interior that set the line apart when it opened in stages between the late 1960s and early 1970s. Above the route diagram are period poster adverts including Daltons Weekly and Brook Street Bureau, both using the cheeky, irreverent style of recruitment advertising common at the time. The line diagram beneath the windows shows the route from Brixton through Victoria, Oxford Circus, Euston, King’s Cross St Pancras and Finsbury Park to Seven Sisters, a reminder that this was still the comparatively new north-south Tube line of the era. The hanging grab handles, fluorescent lighting and uncluttered carriage design give the image a distinctly 1970s Underground feel.
