Queen Street, City of London 1977. A rare surviving scar from the Blitz remained visible on this corner of Queen Street well into the 1970s. The exposed gable end — braced with heavy timbers and still showing layers of old paint, plaster and wallpaper — is the result of wartime bomb damage that had never been fully rebuilt. Across the City, similar “missing teeth” lingered for decades after 1945, gradually filled in as redevelopment accelerated. In contrast to the shattered Victorian fabric on the left, the curved modern office block on the right represents the post-war rebuilding era that reshaped much of the Square Mile. A bright yellow Commer van speeds through the junction, adding a dash of colour to this otherwise muted scene of a City still carrying physical reminders of the war more than 30 years on.
