For decades Samuel French was one of Britain’s most important theatrical publishers and script suppliers, serving professional companies, amateur dramatic societies and theatre enthusiasts from this Covent Garden address. The shop window is filled with play texts and theatrical material, while a car dusted with snow in the foreground gives the scene an unexpectedly wintry touch. It is a wonderfully understated view of a business that played a major role in British theatre history, captured in the streets around Covent Garden before later commercial change transformed much of the area.
