A bright summer day on the Strand in 1979, looking east toward St Mary le Strand. On the right is the Savoy Theatre, its vertical sign just visible above the canopy—still in its pre-1990s form before the major refurbishment that followed the 1990 fire. On the left stands the Thomas Cook travel agency, a long-time fixture of the Strand, and beside it the corner frontage of the Strand Palace Hotel, one of the area’s best-known hotels since its opening in 1909. Tucked beneath the hotel’s ground floor is Dunn & Co, the ubiquitous men’s hat and clothing retailer whose branches once dotted high streets across Britain. Black taxis, Routemasters and late-1970s saloons create a classic London streetscape, just before the 1980s redevelopment boom began to alter the Strand’s architectural mix. The scene captures the street in the final years of its traditional look—busy, slightly worn around the edges, and unmistakably West End.
