Midland Road beside St Pancras station in 1973, with the vast rear elevations, arcades and service buildings of the Midland Railway complex stretching away beneath the Gothic towers of the Midland Grand Hotel. The street scene is comparatively quiet, with only a handful of cars and lamp standards breaking up the long run of brick arches, yet the architecture gives a strong sense of the scale of the station estate behind Euston Road. The old station-side buildings lining Midland Road were still largely intact at this date, but most of what is seen here beyond St Pancras itself has since been swept away and redeveloped. Today the British Library occupies the site on the right, making this an especially valuable record of a lost railway streetscape on the western side of St Pancras.
