This 1976 photograph looks out across St Katharine Docks during a period of rapid change, with the red lightship Nore and the steam tug Challenge moored in the foreground beside surviving dock buildings and small leisure craft. Beyond the basin, long ranks of former dock warehouses still stretch into the distance, while cleared ground, demolition rubble and scattered redevelopment work show how much of the old working landscape was already being dismantled. The view captures the docks at a remarkable in-between moment, when historic maritime structures, preserved vessels and new leisure use coexisted with the raw physical evidence of Docklands transformation. It is not just a view of St Katharine Docks, but a record of inner London at the point where the commercial dock world was giving way to a very different future.
