This 1976 photograph shows the dark, narrow canyon of St Mary Overy’s Wharf on the River Thames, with tall brick warehouse walls rising on either side and an old riverside crane still spanning the gap above. The painted wharf name on the left-hand building, weathered brickwork, boarded openings and hoists all preserve the atmosphere of working dockland London, even as the place already felt worn out and close to obsolescence. Seen from ground level, the view has a strong sense of enclosure, with only a glimpse of brighter modern buildings beyond hinting at the wider city outside. More than just a study of old warehouse architecture, the image captures a surviving fragment of Thames-side commercial London at the point where its industrial purpose was fading but its physical character remained powerfully intact.
