St Pancras station on Euston Road in 1973, with the vast Gothic frontage of the Midland Grand Hotel stretching across the scene beneath its famous clock tower. The great red-brick facade, dense with arches, gables, turrets and iron balcony work, dominates the view, while below it a busy forecourt and car park are filled with period traffic including a black London taxi and a red Volkswagen Beetle. The British Rail double-arrow sign at the station entrance and the large ST PANCRAS lettering across the building root the photograph firmly in the British Rail era, when the station still had a worn but immensely imposing presence. It is a fine broad view of one of London’s most distinctive railway buildings before its later restoration, capturing both the grandeur of Sir George Gilbert Scott’s design and the everyday street life gathered beneath it.
