This 1977 photograph shows the Tate Gallery in London, now Tate Britain, with visitors gathered on the broad entrance steps beneath the building’s imposing neoclassical portico. The bright red Tate Gallery banners add a strong splash of colour against the pale stone façade, while a bicycle by the railings and passing traffic in the foreground help place the museum firmly within the everyday life of late-1970s London. The grand entrance front, with its Corinthian columns, sculptural decoration and high pediment, is seen here after the heavy soot-darkening of earlier decades but before the more recent rebranding of the institution. More than just a view of a famous gallery, the image captures Tate Britain at a moment when it still looked every inch the formal national gallery of old London, but with a more modern public face beginning to emerge.
