This 1976 photograph shows the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London, with its broad entrance canopy and stage-door frontage carrying neon advertising for Billy. At the time the theatre was hosting the hit musical inspired by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall’s Billy Liar, with Roy Castle in the title role, and the bright sign above the canopy makes that moment in the theatre’s history instantly clear. The faded green “Drury Lane Theatre” lettering beneath the neon, the dark columns, and the rather plain side elevation all give the building a distinctly workmanlike West End appearance from this angle, quite different from the more theatrical glamour associated with the auditorium inside. A motorcyclist passing in the foreground adds another small but useful slice of everyday 1970s London street life. More than just a theatre exterior, the image captures Drury Lane at a specific moment in the long running life of one of London’s most famous playhouses.
