This 1976 photograph shows the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London, its great classical portico of Corinthian columns and pediment dominating the corner as traffic and pedestrians move past in the West End below. The fascia carries the theatre’s name in gold lettering, while the illuminated side panel advertises The Circle, the Somerset Maugham play then in the repertoire. To the left, the blue frontage of a Soccenti’s shop adds another small but useful piece of period street detail, while a motorcycle and a white saloon parked by the kerb help root the scene firmly in the mid-1970s. More than just a theatre exterior, the image captures one of London’s great surviving playhouses still functioning as part of an ordinary working street, rather than as an isolated heritage monument.
