This 1974 photograph shows the Barbican in London not long after completion, with its striking concrete terraces, elevated walkways and tower blocks creating one of the capital’s most ambitious post-war residential landscapes. The scene combines broad open podium spaces, planted balconies and the surviving fragment of the old London Wall at left, neatly linking the area’s Roman past with its bold modern redevelopment by the City of London. The great slab and tower forms of the estate dominate the view, yet the benches, trees and small figures below soften the scale and show the Barbican already settling into daily use. More than just a study of Brutalist architecture, the image captures the estate in its early years, when the Barbican still felt newly built and unlike anything else in London.
