View across the Pool of London towards the south bank between Tower Bridge and London Bridge, an area that was still largely industrial and commercial at the time. Beyond the bridge, the dominant high-rise is Guy’s Tower (opened 1974), part of Guy’s Hospital, which remains the only major structure in this view to survive today. Immediately to its right is Southwark Towers (completed 1975), a large office complex at London Bridge Street that later became infamous as an obstacle to redevelopment and was demolished in 2008 to make way for The Shard. The lower buildings along the riverfront are a mix of 19th- and early-20th-century wharves and warehouses lining Shad Thames, St Saviour’s Dock, and adjacent riverside plots. By the mid-1970s many were semi-derelict, used for light industry or storage, and awaiting redevelopment. Almost all were swept away or converted during the late-1970s and 1980s regeneration of the area.
Apart from Tower Bridge itself and Guy’s Hospital, virtually everything visible in this photograph has since been demolished or radically transformed, making this a rare record of the Pool of London just before its transition from working riverfront to modern commercial and residential district.
