This 1972 photograph shows Tower Bridge rising above the cleared redevelopment land at St Katharine by the Tower, with a Taylor Woodrow Property Co. Ltd. site board and white fencing in the foreground. The map on the hoarding makes it clear that this part of the riverside was already being prepared for major change, while the open ground and surviving industrial buildings at right still belong to the older dockside landscape that had not yet disappeared. Tower Bridge itself dominates the background, but the real interest of the image lies in the contrast between the great Victorian landmark and the raw redevelopment site below it. More than just a bridge view, it captures the Tower Bridge area in 1972 at a moment when old dockland was being cleared and planned for a very different future.
