This 1972 photograph looks across Trafalgar Square towards the Strand side of the square, with one of the fountains in the foreground, Nelson’s Column at right and crowds scattered among the pigeons below. The skyline is rich in period detail, especially the large Bovril sign mounted high on the rooftop, while at street level the bright frontage advertising Show Boat can be seen on the theatre building beyond. Red London buses, dense traffic and the dark mass of late-Victorian commercial buildings give the scene the unmistakable atmosphere of central London before later changes to traffic flow and the square itself.
