Looking north along Whitehall in 1972, this view catches the broad ceremonial street in a more everyday mood, with a London Transport request stop in the foreground and a route 77 RT bus standing at the kerb showing Tooting on its destination blind. A black Bedford CF van drives past. Beyond the traffic, the equestrian Earl Haig memorial stands in the centre of the road and Nelson’s Column rises above Trafalgar Square in the distance, with the dome of the National Gallery visible behind. The scene is full of useful period detail, from the red buses and mixed traffic to the plane trees, stone government buildings and the bus stop panel itself, showing Whitehall before later traffic controls and security changes altered the look of this stretch of central London.
