At the W. H. Smith bookstall in Waterloo station in 1972, with two women browsing the racks of magazines, books and paperbacks beneath signs promising “reading pleasure” for the journey. The photograph is full of everyday British Rail-era detail, from the magazine vending machine on the left and the tightly packed shelves of titles to the coats, gloves and headscarf worn by the shoppers. Particularly striking is the printed Mayflower scarf, adding an extra flash of period character to this otherwise ordinary station shopping scene. It is a fine close-up of the sort of bookstall that once formed an essential part of every major British station, capturing the quieter commercial side of Waterloo as well as the fashions and habits of early-1970s travellers.
